Baby Jellybean had an early arrival at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia (pregnancy induced hypertension). I had noticed my fingers and toes feeling really tight over the Easter holidays, and periodic measuring of my blood pressure showed elevations to 140s/90s. At our routine OB appointment, my blood pressure measured 150/100 and I was admitted to the hospital for a few hours of observation and labwork. At that time, I was 36 weeks. I was put on a week of bedrest and told that jellybean would be induced the following week when I made it to term at 37 weeks.
David & I were not mentally prepared for the baby to be coming that early, but we had no choice at that point! Every moment I had with the little one still inside me kicking me and pushing against me I cherished because I knew that it would not be long before he would be out and screaming and crying!
The day before our induction, I was on a clear liquid diet starting noon. We were to call into the hospital at 4:30pm to see when we would be able to come in. There weren't any beds, so we kept calling back every few hours to see when we could come. Finally, at midnight, they said for us to be there around 1am! By this time, I was starving and sleepy, but we made the trek out to the med center. We swung by Methodist also so that I could return my parking card and my pager from the ICU rotation that I never got to complete.
Upon arriving, I was hooked up to the monitors, had an IV started, and then one of the nurses inserted Cytotec for cervical dilation since I was only fingertip at that point. Talk about uncomfortable. We spent the night, or what was left of it, trying to get some rest. Early the next morning, I still wasn't dilated very much, so I was given another dose of Cytotec. Prior to that, I hadn't been feeling any contractions and no pain at all, but after the second dose, Pitocin was started to artifically make my uterus contract, and I finally started slowly dilating. The contractions slowly became more and more uncomfortable, and I had dilated to about 2-3 cm.
I finally asked for an epidural when the contractions started getting more uncomfortable. The epidural made me numb from my chest down and I could not move anything at all. The exams after that became very tolerable! That evening, my parents came to visit us around 8pm. They stayed until close to 10pm. At that time, I was only 6cm, so we told them it still might be a while before the baby would arrive. Shortly after they left, I was enjoying a lifesaver popsicle and talking to David when all of a sudden I felt very nauseous and immediately threw up. Our nurse decided it was time to check again, and I was 10cm with anterior lip (close to complete)!! We couldn't believe baby was almost here!
Our OB made it to the hospital about 11pm to help me push. You could say that it was the quietest delivery ever! In between pushes, we were talking and gossiping and joking around. David said he would only cut the baby's cord if it had black hair! haha. We were trying to have the baby out before midnight, but it was difficult to push when I had no feeling below my chest! Finally, at 12:33am, baby jellybean arrived screaming and crying! After getting him checked out and cleaned up, we got to spend some time with him before he went to the nursery.
We got sent to a postpartum room where I had to get hooked up to 24 hours of Magnesium for my preeclampsia... which sucked because they had removed my Foley catheter, so I had to get up literally every hour to pee, and it was 400-500cc each time! When we got to our room, nothing in the room worked, but David was able to fix everything, which led the nurses to ask if he wanted a part time job there :) hehe. At around 4am, we got a call saying that the baby had to go to the NICU because he was breathing too fast, which made us sad because we thought we were going to be able to spend more time with him. We tried to get some sleep after that though.
The baby ended up staying in the NICU for 24 hours where his breathing finally slowed down some. He did not enjoy having a feeding tube down his mouth though! FINALLY, on Friday, we were both discharged home!
The first night home was rough.. he was up all night. The following week, he was readmitted to the NICU at Women's for jaundice, where he had to "suffer" under phototherapy lights for a day. Yeah, he enjoyed getting a tan! Finally, he was back home with mommy... and every day has gotten better. I love canoodling with him and our favorite thing to do is take naps with each other. He loves tummy time on Mommy's chest and he can sleep for hours like that. He is growing so much every day... he no longer fits his newborn onesies!!
We will be celebrating his one month this weekend... I can't believe he's already a month old! As much as I can't wait for him to get bigger so he will be more interactive with us, I know I will probably miss these times, just like I miss being pregnant with him and feeling his little movements. I look at his eyes and I see my wonderful hubby's eyes. His litte mouth and chin reminds me of my sweet Daddy. Everything about him is a conglomeration of the love of me & David. There is so much more... and life is just getting started. I don't know how I'll ever leave him in 2 weeks to go back to work..........
